CPCS Plant Operation Courses

Introduction

The Construction Plant and Competence Scheme (CPCS) provides skills cards for the plant sector of the Construction industry.

CPCS is recognised by the UK Contractors Group (UKCG) and Major Home Builders Group (MHBG), amongst others, as the preferred card to comply with codes of practice for competence and certification.

It was launched in 2003 at the request of employers, to help them comply with regulations and requirements, and aims to apply common standards for all plant operators.

CPCS covers a large range of plant and plant-related categories, and more are constantly added.

CPCS is owned by the Construction Industry Training Board (otherwise known as CITB) which allocates staff to manage and administer it on behalf of the CPCS Management Committee that develops its policy and strategy.

CMT has a large variety of construction industry CPCS courses available in their Cambridge training centre.

Certification

Red Card - Trained Operator Card

The Trained Operator Card confirms a level of core skills, knowledge and understanding that can be applied in the workplace until measured as competent against national standards. Experienced and able operators may hold a Trained Operator Card whilst being measured against national standards through an SVQ or NVQ.

Blue Card - Competent Operator Card

The Competent Operator Card tells the observer that the holder has demonstrated a level of health and safety awareness through the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test, underpinning knowledge previously through a CPCS theory test, operating ability previously through a CPCS practical test and operating competence on the type of plant (evidenced by an SVQ or NVQ or employer confirmation of competence).

Course Requirements

Candidates require the relevant Health and Safety, Environmental touch screen test. Candidates must bring and wear their PPE on site for plant testing. They must also bring signature and photographic identification as required for all testing. The CPCS Theory Test is recorded digitally by the tester to ensure adherence with CPCS Standards. The CPCS practical test may be recorded using a video recorder if the CPCS request it.
